Case Studies
British Waterways - Repairs to
long term leak paths.
Pennine’s wide range of restricted access drilling
plant and compact, mobile grout platforms allow access to many
difficult to reach locations on the UK’s canal network.
Over a number of years Pennine has supplied specialist services
to BW in finding, isolating and finally sealing long term leak
paths in many canal structures throughout the north of England.
The method, specifically developed by Pennine in conjunction
with BW engineers, employs the compact, lightweight restricted
access TD305 drill rig & powerpack along with mobile grout
platforms using Bentonite based leak sealing products.
In addition to technical services Pennine also acts as Principal
Contractor in full accordance with CDM regulations and employs
a full time Health & Safety coordinator to ensure full compliance
with client requirements.

St James' Hospital - Bovis/Heyrod
Construction Ltd
During the development of a new Oncology Unit at St James’
Hospital, Leeds it became apparent that a number of excavated
slopes would require stabilisation using the Ischebeck soil nailing
system.
Due to the immediate availability of Ripamonti/Marini lightweight
feed beams & rotary-percussive rockdrills within the hire
fleet Pennine was able to offer an immediate and cost effective
solution within budget and program.
Utilisation of Pennine’s workshop and fitting facilities
in conjunction with their highly trained fitter/operators allowed
all the necessary plant and equipment to be fabricated and mounted
onto ‘hired in’ mini-excavators to suit the specific
requirements of the site.
All Pennine operatives are fully trained in the use of all plant
and equipment within the hire fleet and all carry CSCS Site Operative
cards as a minimum in addition to other specific training qualifications.
This enabled Pennine to offer fully operated use of all drilling
and grouting plant to complete the works within the client’s
CDM and Health & Safety criteria.

Rochdale
RUFC – Grout infilling & capping of redundant mineshaft
In addition to working for larger client’s as both
principal and sub-contractor Pennine is also able to offer its
full range of services and facilities to smaller private clients.
Rochdale RUFC had to undertake works to a redundant mineshaft
prior to the sale of the existing clubhouse and car parking area
for housing development.
Pennine’s works involved the excavation and exposure of
the existing, non-compliant cap together with removal of the same.
In addition two holes were drilled to the known depth of the
shaft at 85metres b.g.l. and the shaft was then backfilled with
a 10:1 PFA/OPC grout.
Finally a new reinforced concrete shaft cap was constructed at
a finished level of 3.5metres below existing ground level and
the whole site reinstated.
On completion of the works a full report was produced and provided
to both the client and the Coal Authority as required by the relevant
regulations.
